Juicy Lucy The Dugout Canoe is one of two canoes that I got out of one big cottonwood tree at Cooper's Landing, in Columbia, Missouri. This was a "first" for me, as trees are rarely big enough for ONE canoe! I started carving on her on May 14th, 2016. After taking a Winter break, Canoe Camp is now open for Spring! There are still bad weather days, but I'm usually in camp.
She is about 17ft long, and I anticipate her finished weight to be around 275-300lbs. This canoe will hold three adults. She will have Dugout Canoe Love's signature features... paddle and mast stows! After all, extra paddles are a must, and sailing these canoes is too much fun! I get the feeling Lucy will be quite nimble, and an excellent one or two man canoe for longer trips. One person should be able to carry supplies for a week or two. Follow her journey here... https://www.facebook.com/Juicy-Lucy-The-Dugout-Canoe-1592163494409757/ Canoe! Canoe! |
THE FROG
A little tree frog joined us in Canoe Camp during our first week of carving! The little guy seemed to be right at home on top of the bow knot! Listening to the tree, I'm attempting to carve a frog on top of a frog. This is my own wave-breaking modification to the traditional shovel-nose, which I do to honor my Wanapum family on the Columbia River.

SIGNATURE FEATURES
Lucy may not be HUGE, but she's big on features! Two paddle stows are on her starboard side, with a mast stow on the port. A "rib" in the middle of the canoe will give it extra strength, so I can carve her reasonably thin without the necessity of thwarts across the canoe. At this point, it looks like she'll also have a perch for the Captain, as well. Seats haven't been decided on, yet. I always suggest sitting on your bedroll... the softest thing in the canoe! We'll figure it out, eventually!

A SIAMEZE TWIN
Her bow was kissing Anna's stern before they were separated at the knot! After carving some rot away, she had an interesting "look."
