This cottonwood found me in Westminster, Colorado. Part of a pair, she had been struck by lightning, years ago. The property owner had the trees cut-off about 14-ft up, still in the ground, about two years ago. The bigger one sprouted in several places, only a year ago! She wasn't ready to die...
I was amazed at her size! I don't get trees that are quite so wide, very often. The scars are interesting, and give her character. I assumed that one of them would be the natural "top" of the canoe. I try to use the natural curves and marks of the tree, when helping it become a canoe.
As it turns out, BOTH scars will be highlighted, on the top of the canoe. She'll be wide, though not very long. I expect to have a very nice canoe shape, when all is said and done.
I am working on this project, currently, at Wheat Ridge Canoe Camp. When complete, I will head up to Twin Bridges, Montana, to take Knotty The Dugout Canoe down the Mighty Mo'.
This canoe, Tesla, will let me know where we're going... eventually. Click on the Facebook link to follow her progress! Canoe! Canoe!
